before moving to Roanoke ;;
Rachel Marie Marten is the youngest child of Mr. Andrew and Mrs. Elizabeth Marten. Drew and Ellie had dreamed of a relatively large family since they got engaged and they succeeded. Ray was proceeded by three older siblings. The oldest child of the Marten family, Rachel's elder by six years, is Carson, who by far has the closest relationship with his youngest sister. In between the two are the twins, Cora and Kaitlyn, who are two years Rachel's senior. The family did try to have another child after Rachel, but only Carson is old enough to remember the tough times following the miscarriage and news that Ellie wasn't able to have any more babies. But all that put aside, Rachel grew up the baby of a throughly upper middle class family with a father who is a successful banker in Boston and a mother who spends her days as a stay at home mom. Rachel had the enjoyment of being somewhat pampered since there were never money troubles in the Marten household, yet there was enough structure for all the children to avoid getting prissy, spoiled attitudes.
Rachel's childhood was as average as they go. She was a playful kid, defiantly more tomboyish than her sisters, and she found herself looking up to her brother more than anyone. She constantly tagged along with Carson, which he did find annoying at times but not nearly as much as one would expect. They were defiantly buddies. Being the youngest child in the house, that means that there were at least two years that Rachel was the only one sitting at home while her older siblings were at school all day. Despite having her mom for company, Rachel was one of those kids who got lonely and couldn't wait to start school. Though, when she finally did start up in kindergarden, the experience wasn't quite what she expected. At home, surrounded by family, Rachel had felt much more fearless and out-spoken; but here, in a room filled with unfamiliar children and a strange woman in charge, it was easier just to quiet down and blend in.
Mrs. Kirkland is lucky enough not to have any horrific tragidies or unpleasant memories to taint her childhood. Of course, that isn't to say that life was a walk in the park. As a child and through the transition from pre-teen to full fledged teenager, Rachel was a quiet girl who prefered to blend rather than stick out. She was very much the 'girl next door' type, as in she is pretty and friendly, yet not noticed much by the royals of the school. There are probably three major events in her life that have much signifigance. First, she moved from energized Boston to a quiet town in Virginia, just a few hours away from Roanoke. Second, she began the horse riding portion of her life at age eight, shortly after moving to her second home; and last, she met the love of her life.
So, when Rachel was about eight years old her father got a job transfer and the family packed up and moved to Virginia. While Carson and the twins were upset, Rachel didn't waste time mourning. She was only leaving a few friends, and the city life wasn't much to her liking anyway. In fact, she couldn't wait to start over in a tiny, cozy town. She certianly felt a bit more comfortable surrounded by the small town students at her new school. She even made her best friend here, a spunky girl named Marissa who brought out a more out-going streak in Rachel. The girl was flourishing here and it only went uphill. One weekend, Marissa invited Rachel to visit her aunt's small riding stable. Rachel had always been one of those girls who admired horses and had even asked for a pony once for her birthday ( don't we all ), but the closest she had been to the creatures was a pony ride at the fair. This was a whole different experience and Rachel was hooked.
After that one weekend, all the Martens heard was a rambling about horses and riding. Her parents hesitiantly agreed to let Rachel take riding lessons; they were supportive, yes, but were a bit skeptical that Rachel would actually keep up this hobby. It was soon aparent that the little girl had no intentions of dropping out. At first, she was taking lessons purely for the fun of riding. Rachel glowed whenever her teacher complimented her or called her a natural, yet she struggled, like any rider. It wasn't until she attended a horse show that she discovered the excitment of eventing. So, she started training in beginners dressage and went over her first low cross-rails. As the years went by, she steadily improved. She was fourteen when she got her first horse of her very own, a handsome dappled gray Irish Sport horse gelding named Private Ryan. Ry became her pride and joy; there is no doubt she has the closest relationship with him out of all of her horses. In present day, Rachel and Ryan are both intermediate level in eventing, an accomplishment Rachel is very proud of.
On to the love of Ray's life. When she was fifthteen, a new rider came to her stable. Edwin Kirkland was two years older than her, and at first they didn't pay much attention to each other. Of course, Rachel noticed him since he was new and attractive, but it wasn't until school started and they were seated next to each other in study hall that they started acknowlegding each other. It was the only class they had together, since he was two years older, but they recognized each other from the stables and started talking. Eventually this talking evolved into a friendship. Ed would give her rides until she got her drivers liscense, they went to the movies and mall in groups, and of course there was the stables. They were very good friends for a year or so before they actually started dating, tentively at first. Their relationship grew slowly as they tested the waters; being friends they were afraid to ruin anything. Obviously, everything worked out, not without a few bumps in the road, but they stayed together even after Ed started college while Rachel stayed in high school. Just after she turned twenty, the couple got married and the two have just recently gotten their first place in Roanoke.

role-play sample:
Rachel squatted on one knee, her green eyes narrowing as they strained to see in the dull lighting. Not that it did much help, what with Wonder fidgeting. The young woman had to stand and take a step back to put herself out of reach of the mare's sharp hooves. Sighing in frustration, Rachel turned to reach for a halter, thinking back to the blissful mood that had met her this morning when she woke up. That feeling had quickly dissolved when she arrived to the stables to find that her mare, Wonder, had somehow managed to catch herself on something in the stall. Currently, small droplets of blood were sliding from a long scratch on the buckskin's back leg. Upon quick observation, Rachel had found that the wound was indeed long and nasty look, but not as bad as it looks, as they would say. Not very deep at all, actually. But it did require some first aid attention, even if it was from her inexperienced hand. But first, Wonder must be tied; Rachel couldn't say she was looking forward to the task ahead. The mare was already a restless, energized animal and not to mention a sissy. Dressing the cut would, no doubt, take a while.
The first aid kit was plain, but it had everything she needed. She had a wet cloth to clean the area, antibiotic cream and bandages. Now, to secure Wonder. Rachel held a halter with a lead rope attached the buckskin looked on with weary eyes. It was easy to catch the horse since they were in a stall and there wasn't much place to run. Wonder was still enough as Rachel slipped the halter over her silky ears, cooing soft reassurances, before tieing a quick release knot. Now for the hard part, and the most unpleasant. Rachel scooped her long, wavy brown tresses into a sloppy bun, keeping it out of her way while she doctored the horse. After retrieving her first aid supplies from where she left them, the young woman bent down, her voice sounding in soothing tones. "Easy Wonder. Good girl." Her voice was a nice sound with a calming effect on the horse. Rachel stroked the mare's soft butterscotch coat, rubbing her fingers in circles until she felt the mare's muscles relaxed.
Rolling up the sleeves of her shirt, Rachel bend over, keeping an eye on the mare's reaction as she gentling cleaned the leg with the wet rag. Wonder tensed, unsurprisingly, but she was shockingly mild tempered for the time being. It was when it was time to disinfect the wound that Wonder started to act up. There was a noticable tensing of her muscles, her eyes rolled and her ears disappeared in her black mane. Wonder shifted her legs, clearly unhappy. Rachel paused, her careful green eyes watching to see if she would need to make a quick getaway if Wonder should decide to strike out. Luck was with her, or Wonder just decided to comply, because the mare stopped fidgeting, though her ears remained hidden in her mane. Just a few minutes later, Rachel was finishing up the bandaging as she wrapped the dressing around the mare's leg to protect the wound from the outside world. Rachel couldn't help but heave a sigh of releaf once the whole ordeal was over, and she was pleased that she had escaped without any bumps or cuts herself. "All done girl. You were so good," she murmured as she cleaned up the first aid supplies, completely ready to move on with her day.
