i ;; face
To describe a face, you need to observe all the different compenents as they are thrown together, mix-matching in way. If you get lucky, the parts you get stuck with fit together as well as puzzle pieces. Though Jake would never dream about being vain enough to say this describtion fits him, most agree that his appearance isn't merely average. Girls seem to think he is good-looking, though he doesn't consider himself handsome to much extent, even if he is. Though not perfect, Jake is lucky enough to have facial features that looked like someone took time to place with careful thought. Going through the phases of puberty, the transition of boy to man, has thankfully rid his face of "baby fat", not that he was a chubby boy to begin with. Anyway, the shape of his face as narrowed and the point of his jaw as sharpened, as well as the curve of his chin.
Like any throwing together of features, even in the best, mistakes are made. Like the size of Jacob's nose, which is un-proportioned in comparision to the rest of his face. Though many people don't seem to notice, or care in the least, that this young man's nose is slightly too large for his face. Nor do they mention that his forehead is on the small side or that his lips could be just slightly too full for a male. Jake's smile is nice, not perfect in any sense, but his teeth are white enough and are lined surprisingly well considering he never had braces - it isn't shocking that there are a few flaws here and there. The thing that people normally do catch when peering at this young, good-looking face is the white line of a scar arching slightly over the length of his left eyebrow. The result of a crashing encounter with a coffee table as a young child, the scar is a thin, white line, just slightly rised. It is a mark that wouldn't be noticed if it weren't for his tone of skin.
Every person has that speical feature, a redeeming quality of sorts that is possibly able to make up for most of their flaws. Though Jake's face, imperfect as it is, already looks good, handsome if you ask most people, his star feature would have to be his eyes. Some people wouldn't find brown a spectacular eye color; isn't mud color undesirable compared to lush green or ocean tinted blue? In this case, calling Jacob's eyes 'a shade of dirt' would not give them the justice they deserve. The color is such a dark color that the pupils seem to disappear, to sink in their vastness. Being the underlineing of thick, black brows does more to shadow and darken the color. But even though the color is so dark, their expression mirrors a liveyness and energy that make them seem light. Just like their holder, Jake's eyes are warm and inviting, though that energetic makes them almost undefineable. Someone once comapred his eyes to mustang eyes and the describtion just sticked, since it was the best anyone could come up with.ii ;; shoshone resemblance
People are surprised when they see Luke Dawson standing next to Jake and learn that the two are father and son. Then they set to work wondering how a fair man could be the parent of such a darkly toned boy. The answer, Jacob Dawson is half Shoshone. If he were to get out a picture of his mother, it would all click. Jake really does resemble his mom more then his father. His skin is that beautiful, dark almost russet shade that one could expect to see on a Native American - Jake's skin color is down-towned a bit, not as dark and deep. You could almost explain it as being a nice tan if you were naive of his past, but once you learn of his heiritage, it clicks. He suddenly looks Native American, or half Natice American.
Jacob's other Shoshone trait, which sets him apart from the blonde and light-haired members of his father's family, is his dark, dark hair. He has his mother's hair, a nice looking black shade of hair that is straight without much wave. His hair wouldn't stand out though, wouldn't influence people to match it with the Shoshone if they didn't know, because he does not wear it in a pony tail. His mom did keep her beautiful hair long, about mid-way to her back, which she liked to wear in a braid. But no, Jake keeps his hair shorter, though he would never tolerate a buzz cut. He doesn't usually give much effort in taking care of his hair or styling, because, well, he is a boy. He would never use gel, unless for very speical occasions. The extent of caring for his shiny black hair is washing it in the shower every morning. And really, what else does he need to do? It looks fine the way he has it now, adding to his handsome appearance.iii ;; height&weight
Probably the one thing Jacob could say he got from his father would be his size. He is actually a bit taller then the norm for his age group. He was actually a bit on the short side as a young kid, believe it or not. Then, of course, he became a teenager where all sorts of funky stuff happens and boom! Jake experiences a growth spurt. He rarely gives out his height, mostly because he doesn't care enough to keep track, but last time he checked he was a little shorter than six feet - maybe 5'10'' or something. Mr. Luke Dawson is also pretty large, as in tall and broad, but just recently Jake passed his father by an inch or so. It was always weird for him to be taller then other people is age, so it was a little odd standing higher, even by a little, than his father.
Now, Luke Dawson is a broad, bulky kind of man, very solid looking. However Jake once again takes after his mother since he is actually pretty lean and long looking. Jacob isn't one of those flat, skinny guys that might be assosicated with geeks. Being a working boy, or man, or whatever, and living on a farm, Jake is pretty fit to say in the least. No flab can be found here. Sure, he doesn't look as muscular and large as his dad, but a lot of Jake's poundage is made up of tight muscle. As mentioned, he has gained every ounce by working, not working out in a gym, though he does run and may do a few crunches. He may even have a six-pack. Who knows; Jake isn't vain enough to show off.
p e r s o n a l i t y ;;
i ;; fun loving
Jacob may be mature in ways that others his age are not, but all and all he is a teenager and enjoys a good time. He is by nature an out-going person and probably has the ability to make friends with almost anyone. Most of the time, he has a loose, relaxed posture, which usually does appear inviting and comforting. Jake is sometimes described as 'everyone's best friend'. He is just a guy who loves to have fun, make jokes, and can pin-point a person left out and work them into the coversation or group, smoothly and with a "no big deal" additude. Just like his eyes, Jacob Dawson is a warm, friendly, and generally nive boy who enjoys making friends and rushes forward into it instead of hanging out with the shy people.ii ;; hard-headed and stubborn
Well, Jacob may be free-floating with people, but just isn't the type of person who gives up easilly. He has been called hard-headed and doesn't care. When he has his mind fixed on doing something, whether it be something as simple as getting an everyday chore done or something like meeting his goal in jogging or even breaking through with an equally hard-head, spirted colt, he sees it to the end. Jake also isn't one to budge in an arguement without difficulty. A lot of times he sees things as black and white, right and wrong ( though some things he can be persuaded otherwise ), which isn't always a good thing. People who knew Kim say that Jake got his stubborness from her, who liked to do things her way without interference. With all of this, it isn't surprising that Jake doesn't look up to people who give up - he really admires people who work as hard as they can to get something they want.iii ;; his temper
Yes, everyone has it, even fun-loving, friendly Jake. He usually has a long fuse, as they say, but he gets attached to things, like horses and friends, and therefore is protective. Jake has that silent type of anger. He won't yell, or curse, instead he goes still, like a cold stone, and tightens his jaw and tenses his body. He doesn't talk much when he is mad, and when he does its low, like a hiss, and can be harsh. In extreme cases, Jacob Dawson has been known to turn to violence. He hates himself afterwards, but sometimes he gets so mad that only punching something could help. Thankfully, this doesn't happen much - being stubborn Jake can usually keep control of his anger. But I guess you never know.

Every person's life story begins with a telling romance. Jacob's retelling is no different. His father, a proud, fair-haired man, was born and raised in Utah. Luke Dawson's father worked as a foreman on a ranch, so he grew up surrounded by horses and western riding. His mother, a beautiful woman named Kim, lived in Nevada as a kid before moving to Virgina. Kim's parent's came from Shoshone families and had lived in Nevada their whole life, so it was strange that the russet skinned, black haired family moved clear across the country. Eventually her parent's would move back after Kim finished high school, but despite her love for horses and mustangs, she adored Virgina.
The two met in College, since they both attended one in Virgina. They were as different as a couple could be - though Luke was tanned, he was also naturally fair while Kim looked like a traditional Native American. He was shy and soft-spoken, while Kim always seemed to be containing too much energy for her small size. Whatever the reason, whether it be their shared love for horses or the simple phrase 'opposites attract' took part, the two fell in love and married. A year later, they produced a young boy who took after his mother in skin tone and hair color. They would soon find that Jake loved horses as much as they did.part ii ;; why these tears come
Kim had always been a daring woman. Some might call her impulsive, others brave, while a certain few choose words such as reckless or crazy. The truth is, she didn't appreciate people telling her what to do and usually does what she wants. Don't misunderstand, she was a smart person and would never do something that would be dangerous to the ones she love. But after the family moved to work at a quarter horse farm known mostly for their western riding and reining/rodeo, Kim took an active role in breaking in the young horses. People always claimed she was not strong enough or too small to handle the confused creates, but she never listened. She took more than her fair share of falls and kicks; everyone warned her that she would get hurt one day.
But it wasn't the horses that did her in. Kim insisted on driving an old, unreliable truck. Again and again, she was warned it was dangerous, but she shrugged such comments off. Of course it might have done good for her to listen. When young Jake was about four or five, his mother drove out to run an errand. Of course, being her stubborn self, she took no heed to the weatherman's warnings of sleet later on. The weather turned out to be true to the report, and the dray drizzle turned into heavy drops of sleet which coated the roads with a slick covering. Kim was desperate to get home and was actually attempting to be careful, but her unreliable truck slid and crashed - Kim died instantly. Filled with sorrow, Luke and Jake stayed at the stables, trying to continue on with their life.part iii ;; a black colt named smokey
Jake grew up surrounded by horses, beautifully bred Quarter horses and a few paints and Thoroughbreds. They always found an older or gentle horse for the young boy to ride growing up, but he never had a horse of his own until he was about nine. That year Luke decided to take a family vacation, even though it was just the two of them. They visited Luke's childhood friends in Utah, who showed Jake reining and roping, making him realize how much fun they both were. After a little reunion of sorts, Luke took Jake to a BLM center in Nevada. Though many people who were raised on a ranch resented the BLM and mustangs, Kim had always adored the beautiful creatures. Getting the idea that Jake would enjoy adopting a foal to gentle and train, the father and son pair drove up to the adoption center. Luke was right.
Young Jake was so excited, his dark eyes round with amazement. It didn't take him long to pick out a foal - he choose a large, black weanling that had just come in. It was clear the colt was just as stubborn and hard-headed as Jake could be at times, but none of that mattered. Luke agreed and he payed the adoption fee and nodded when the manager explained all regulations. The man rose his eyebrows when Jake announced he would name the colt Smokey, but he was too kind to remind his son that the foal was black.
A while later, after they had returned to the stables in Virgina and were waiting for Smokey to be shipped over, Jake pestered his father to show him more reining. They borrowed a bay gelding named Banjo for Jake to practice on, and by the time Smokey arrived he had the idea that he would train his young colt to be a reiner as he got older. When the mustang weanling first arrived, Luke began to second-guess his judgment. The colt still remembered his wild days and was stubborn, refusing to be handled. Though he was warned, just like his mom so many years ago, Jake refused to give up on his foal. He read his mother's ways on gentling a foal that she learned from her family and eventually they worked. Jake earned the colt's trust and it was clear that the two adored each other.part iv ;; new friends and old friends
Jake had had Smokey for about a year and though the colt was still black, a few flecks of gray were starting to appear here and there. The colt was also consistent in his training and led no problem - he even allowed Jake to put a hackomore on him. It was also around this time that they got new neighbors. The Becketts. Rachel Beckett, the two Dawson's found, was easy to like and so were her two daughters. One was just a bit older than Jacob and the other was a year younger. Though he and Rosalie were closer in age, it was Heleena he connected with more. The two were friends at once, like their mothers had been so long ago, and before long they were riding together - Jake on Banjo and Heleena on Teddy. He showed her reining and she got him to jump a few low jumps.
Heleena even helped hold Smokey when Jake mounted him for the first time. Jake started out riding the black mustang with just a bit-less bridle and no saddle, but he gradually moved up and now rides with a snaffle and western saddle. Luke helped Jake train Smokey to rein, taking it slow. One day Jake and Heleena discovered the slowly graying stallion was a good jumper when he cleared a paddock fence. Though he didn't now much about english riding and didn't care for it like he did western, Jake experimented with a light jumping saddle and got Smokey over a few low cross-rails. Through-out the next few years, black Smokey slowly lightened into a blue roan, then a steel gray, then a silver color. Though its odd for such a young horse, Smokey is now a creamy color. Who would have known that a black colt named Smokey would grow to earn his name.part v ;; life goes on
Just recently Jake's best friend Heleena announced she wanted a reiner. Jake had just bought his second horse, a paint mare named Bambi, from the stable he lived at for a discount since his father was a trainer there. He helped her pick out a three year old gelding from the stable that had already started his reining training, claiming that ' poor old Teddy-Bear was getting confused on whether he was a cow-pony or a show jumper.' Smooth Sailn' was from the same crop as Bambi, so it worked out that they were both working with green horses. Jake persuaded his dad to let him make one final buy from the stable, a young weanling filly that was going to be sold anyway. The half-Shoshone teenager planned to gentle Kimmi, named for his beloved mom, the same way he did Smokey almost seven years ago.
It was then that Luke decided to join the military. It seemed odd that he would but the man was set on it, claiming it was something he had always wanted to do. No one argued and it was decided that Jake would move with the Beckett family to Roanoke, Virgina, just a little whiles away, instead of across the country to Washington where his grandparents now lived. So that is where the story is, we have reached the present it Jacob Dawson's life.
